Somayeh is an Iranian-born writer, director and photographer. After obtaining a BA in Media Arts and an MA in Documentary by Practice from Royal Holloway, University of London, she moved to London in 2011 and began her career as an edit assistant. Over the past 13 years, alongside establishing a successful editing career, Somayeh has honed her voice as a writer and director, working across commercials and narrative projects. She was signed to Ridley Scott Associates, who produced her latest short film, Skin of Water | پوست آب which is currently on the festival circuit and has been nominated for Best UK Short at the BAFTA/BIFA-qualifying Raindance Film Festival 2024. Her previous short film, Baby, was nominated for Best Sound Design at Underwire Festival 2016 and was a semi-finalist at the Miami Short Film Festival.
As part of the next generation of Iranian filmmakers, Somayeh acts as a bridge between Iran and the West. Infusing her work with a blend of these two cinematic approaches, she continues the legacy of Iranian cinema with poetic sensibilities reminiscent of Abbas Kiarostami and Jafar Panahi while also incorporating surreal Western influences inspired by Jonathan Glazer, Yorgos Lanthimos, and Joachim Trier, using heavy sound design, stylised cinematography, and VFX. Her commercial clients include brands such as Pepsi, Facebook, Singleton, Braun, Nike, Audi, LUSH, Puma and Loro Piana. Her photography clients have been Google, Rockstar, Nike, Diabetes UK, Celeste and Skepta. Somayeh holds an O-1 visa and is represented by LosYork in the US and Soup Films in Germany.
